A collective tree nursery to protect the soil

The Participation Group, comprising several members of the Train to Transform collective, is tasked with overseeing a fund dedicated to supporting participatory initiatives made available to the communities and assisted by member organisations of the collective. This fund is used to finance participatory activities initiated and carried out by the communities themselves. Its primary objectives are to address specific issues affecting these communities and to experiment with alternative approaches to driving social change.

In 2022, the participation fund of the Train to Transform collective supported a first initiative : a tree nursery, run by a group of residents of Keur Massamba, supported by the UGPM.

UGPM supports farmers’ groups in the Meckhé region. Many of them face problems of access to water and deteriorating soil quality.

This tree nursery initiative brought together members of six groups from six different villages, who decided to work together to find practical solutions to the problem of their land becoming increasingly unfit for cultivation. The tree nursery, made up of different species of trees, is helping to reforest the area and protect the land. It works thanks to the commitment of local residents, who water the plants on a daily basis. Once the plants have passed through the nursery, they are planted in community and individual fields, helping to protect the fragile ecosystems.
